Who we are
Mathsoc is Newcastle University’s Mathematics Society, operated fully by students! We are one of the largest societies the university has to offer, and you don’t have to study Maths to be a member! We aim to bring together all within the University who have a passion for maths, whether that be through studying a mathematics related degree or just a general interest – all are welcome!
What we do
We run a wide range of events so that everybody can take part with something that they enjoy! Our dedicated social secretaries work with venues across the city to run weekly socials to help our members let off steam.
This includes regular pub quizzes hosted at the Holy Hobo in Jesmond, themed bar crawls, and Alternate Socials ran during the day. In the past these have included trips to the cinema, bubble football, bowling, and pool tournaments! We also run special events such as our Summer & Winter Balls, and a society holiday each year during the Easter break! Further to this, we work with our sponsors to offer career talks exclusively to our members.
MathSoc also have two intramural sports teams available for members to join, Charlie’s Angles for netball and Aftermath for football! Find out more on our sport page.
MathSoc proudly donate to the Newcastle People’s Kitchen, supporting homeless and disadvantaged people in the Newcastle area since 1985, prividing them with hot meals and clothing.
All money raised from our pub quizzes is directly donated, along with any other donations made by our members throughout the year through other events such as bake sales held around campus. Last year, we raised £1380.18 and hope to break this during the next academic year! Donations outside of our regularly held fundraisers can be sent directly to the People’s Kitchen by clicking here.
To get involved, all you need to do is join MathSoc through the NUSU website, then come along to any of our events! Members will receive regular newsletters informing them of events, and everything is also posted to our Facebook page!
